Happy Retirement (Ceremony), Ishiura!
Plus, linking some other sumo stats sites... but we'll see how they develop
First, the other sumo stats sites:
Sumo-API: https://www.sumo-api.com/
Sumostats: https://sumostats.vercel.app/
This second one has a nice display:
I may see if I can use this second one somehow — this is what Ishiura’s page looks like there:
Obviously, they don’t have a pic for Ishiura, but that’s hardly surprising, since he retired June 1, 2023 after over a year of absence due to injury.
That said, the good ole Sumo Database is much easier for me to use, when it’s actually available (which is the issue).
Happy Retirement, Ishiura!
Ishiura’s retirement ceremony was held a year after he announced his retirement (not that unusual).
The last cut was done by Ishiura’s current stablemaster, Isegahama, but obviously there is more connection to his long-time master Miyagino oyakata (aka Hakuho).
Ishiura’s Kimarite
Ishiura’s kimarite profile is fascinating compared to the overall sumo database.
While his top two kimarite were yorikiri and oshidashi, like most rikishi, it’s at much lower levels than the other rikishi.
He was particularly vulnerable to being shoved out of the ring (oshidashi) or slapped down (hatakikomi).
His signature moves were shitatenage (underarm throw), okuridashi (rear push-out), hikiotoshi (hand pull down), and shitatehineri (twisting underarm throw).
Good example of shitatenage:
Two rare moves from Ishiura: mitokorozeme and susotori
When I pulled the record on Ishiura, two kimarite made my lookups puke because I didn’t have them in my database yet:
mitokorozeme: triple attack force out
I think this is one of the kimarite demonstrated at SUMO+SUSHI (I am unsure… but I do remember one being really complicated, and me thinking… I didn’t think I had ever seen that one before.)
According to the Sumo Database, the mitokorozeme has won 0.00% of the time — so it’s extremely rare. This should queue up to the 6:31 mark, to the Ishiura v Nishikigi match on Day 8 in November 2019:
The other rare kimarite is susotori, or toe-pick (to be contrasted to ashitori, which is leg-pick). Ishiura did this one when he was in Makushita, so it’s more difficult to find a video on this.
So follow the link to see the technique.
