As I said in my post when he was promoted to Ozeki, I didn’t have a lot to work with originally, because I usually don’t follow wrestlers until they make Makuuchi.

Onosato has had the fastest rises ever in the sumo ranks, so that makes for a sparse graph.

So I had to dip into obscure videos to try to get at weight data for Onosato when he started out.

That extra weight this tournament surely helped.

I noticed when I did the height-weight graph for the May tournament that Onosato had the greatest official weight gain between the March and May weigh-ins:

Many times, his opponent would try to come up against him at the tachiai and… it’s just running into a wall.

After the weight gain, Onosato was officially the heaviest among the Makuuchi rikishi. That can be an advantage. If you know what to do with it.

When you see what comes in at number 6 for Onosato, you need to remember how rapidly how he’s risen in the ranks:

Yeah, that’s fusen sitting at number 6. That is, his opponent wasn’t there, so he won by default. He won that way 3 times.

So you’ve got an idea of how few pro sumo matches Onosato has been in. He’s had 136 wins and 45 losses. That’s it.

To get in the top 10 kimarite for Onosato, he just needed 2 wins.

There’s not much to analyze right now, what with a primarily oshidashi win, a 75% win percentage overall, and we mainly need more time to see how he develops his sumo more.
