Happy Birthday, Ura!
Looking at the stats of my fave, the pink prince... and passing the time between tournaments
Sorry to let things pass so much since the last post.
I have my other substack I spend more time at (then, of course, my paying job, my three kids, husband Stu, yadda yadda).
But, I can’t let the birthday of my favorite rikishi pass!
Aw, that sweet young man. Maybe not so young anymore, but he’s 32 now (in Japan — his birthday is June 22, and it’s June 21 in New York, where I am, but June 22 in Japan.)
Ura Stat Dump
I’ve done some Ura stat dumps in prior posts here:
Nov 17, 2023: Yay for Ura! First Win for the Pink Prince of Sumo
Dec 25, 2023: Merry Christmas, Komusubi Ura!
Jan 31, 2024: Who Was Most Unique in Hatsu 2024?
Let’s update his profile!
Here is his weight & rank since November 2021:
Ura has lost weight since his peak of over 150 kgs, settling at about 142 kgs (313 pounds).
He is 175 cm (as shown on the JSA site), almost 5’9”.
It may have been his peak weight was just too much for him, which has been the case for other wrestlers.
Ura Kimarite Profile
Using information from the Sumo Database, which has recorded 335 wins and 218 losses for Ura since May 2015.
There was a period, in 2017-2018 and 2019, that Ura was absent due to injuries.
Before that first bout of injuries, he earned a kinboshi (gold star win) for beating Yokozuna Harumafuji with a tottari (arm bar throw) in the July 2017 tournament.
You can see above that tottari is one of Ura’s signature moves compared to other rikishi, along with katasukashi (Midorifuji doesn’t own that one alone).
I also now the other move of the short guys: ashitori (leg pick) is something up there for Ura.
Ura’s weakness: oshitaoshi (frontal push down)
