Perhaps both Yokozuna will make it to the end this time!
The only non-scatterplot material I recommend right now is the Sumo Kaboom! interview with Aonishiki:
Loads of fun!
Full Makuuchi September 2025 Height-Weight Scatterplot
Aw, no Kayo (yeah, we knew he wouldn’t stay.)
With 42 wrestlers, there are often lots of overlapping points with all of them in one graph, so I’ll be splitting them into three groups below.
The size of the bubbles is an attempt to distinguish the ranks (approximately): the bigger the bubble, the higher the rank.
(The color goes along with bubble size, but the colors are similar, being from the Hokusai3 colorway of MetBrewer).
I have three subsets of the above scatterplot, as 42 dots, many of which overlap, is a lot to look at:
Sanyaku (Yokozuna, Ozeki, Sekiwake, Komusubi)
Upper Maegashira (M01 - M08)
Lower Maegashira (M09 - M18)
All the graphs use the same limits on both horizontal and vertical axes, allowing you to see where the wrestlers are positioned in relation to height and weight.
Because I will be using the same axes on all three groupings, there will be a bunch of white space in some of these…
Sanyaku September 2025
Alas, last time, I was anticipating a Y-Y match-up (as were many people).
Here’s the record, remember: Hoshoryu has won 6 times out of 7 against actual matches up against Onosato. [One of the 8 listed below is a fusen loss — aka, an absence by Hoshoryu.]
There are two clusters in sanyaku: the lighter guys and the heavier guys.
There are no short guys — Aonishiki, the shortest of the bunch, is just scant of 6 feet tall. But the range of heights is not much - the tallest, Onosato, is only about 6’4”.
The weight range, on the other hand, is large: 50 kg, or 110 pounds (between Onosato and Wakatakakage).
Upper Maegashira September 2025
With the lower ranks, we get a wider range in height, but about the same range in weight.
Atamifuji, at 192 kg (423 lbs), is the heaviest in Makuuchi.
In Upper Maegashira, the lightest currently is Hiradoumi at 140 kg (309 lbs).
So, just like sanyaku, the weight range is about 50 kg.
But instead of a range of 10 cm, there’s a range of 20 cm in height.
Ura, at 5’9”, is the shortest in this group, and Kinbozan, at 6’5”, is the tallest in Makuuchi. Both Ura and Kinbozan are at Maegashira 8.
Ura seems to be using a much more straightforward style in the first several days of this tournament. Hmmm.
Lower Maegashira September 2025
Ah, there are my small kings!
Yes, it’s tough for Midorifuji, Fujinokawa, and Asakoryu to rise too high in the ranks, alas.
I’ve noticed that Ura has gained weight over several tournaments (he gained 6 kg since the last weigh-in in May! Whew!), which is probably part of a strategy on his part to improve his chances. To be short, and to improve your rank, it seems you need to bulk up, not only improve your technique.
Weight Changes Since Last Weigh-In in May 2025
I don’t have the May 2025 weight for the newbie Hitoshi, but I had the information for everybody else.
Guess who the 12-kg (26.5 pounds) gain was?
Yep, the heaviest boi, Atamifuji. To be fair, he had lost 5 kg between the March and May weigh-ins.
It is tough to maintain one’s target physique.
