Hakke-howdy, y’all!
The rikishi have checked in, and everybody who is going to get re-weighed has gotten re-weighed (I’m a bit skeptical of Terunofuji’s weight, but hey, maybe he hit the same dang weight he supposedly has had for years. Who knows? Or… maybe… as Yokozuna, he doesn’t get re-weighed unless he wants to.)
Weight change histogram
Before I put up the new scatterplots, let’s look at how the weights have changed since the last weigh-in, which was the September tournament.
The negative numbers mean they lost weight since the September 2024 tournament weigh-in.
Positive numbers mean they gained weight.
There are 42 total rikishi in the Makuuchi (and I track them), and we’re seeing a wide variety from loss to gain. Let’s see who the biggest gainers were!
Top Gainers, September 2024 to January 2025
Kotoshoho put on some serious mass! Followed closely by Oshoma.
Some amount of weight gain is a good sign, especially if they’re working on gaining ranks and are building up muscle mass.
Let’s see who lost weight.
Top (Weight) Losers, September 2024 to January 2025
Shonannoumi is one of the heaviest guys in the bunch, as is Atamifuji. It’s tough to maintain weight when you’re already one of the heaviest.
Interestingly, a lot of the smaller guys were in the weight loss group.
I don’t like seeing Hoshoryu in here, but he has been gaining weight in general, and it is tough to hold onto those gains.
Let’s get our final scatterplots before the tournament begins.
