Updated Height-Weight Scatterplot for September 2024 Grand Sumo Tournament

Okay, the picture banzuke is up!

Some rikishi are immediately recognizable (from chest hair… or maybe their kesho-mawashi). This is not exactly to scale. The yobidashi are small, but not that small.

After I did my last scatterplot, there was a height-weight update, so let me first give some stats on the changes, then the graphs.

Height and Weight Changes: Stats

In general, height measurements don’t change, but a few did this time:

Atamifuji: +1cm to 187cm
Mitakeumi: +2cm to 182cm
Churanoumi: +1cm to 177cm
Kagayaki: -1cm to 192cm
Hokutofuji: +1cm to 185cm
Onokatsu: +1cm to 185cm

That’s all the changes out of 42 guys. With respect to precision to nearest centimeter, this isn’t that surprising. I’m more surprised when there are no weight changes.

Here’s the graph of the weight changes:

Shirokuma had the largest weight change between weigh-ins, but he’s down at the Maegashira 16 rank, so the large gain may not be as meaningful.

Hoshoryu’s 7 kilogram gain at ozeki rank may have larger impact.

There are four sitting at the 6-kilogram gain: Atamifuji (M2), Oshoma(M9), Roga(M10), Kitanowaka (M16).

Takayasu has been injured, so I’m not surprised at the 6 kilogram loss.

No weight change… really?

One of the things that annoys me, though, is I have no good weight stats on Terunofuji, not that it really matters as he’s going kyujo on the tournament.

The most common recording on the weight change was zero, which was the same for Terunofuji… but was he even measured?

This is like the absurd 3cm-growth of Midorifuji last year.

Does Isegahama just get to make up their measurements?

I’ll just move on.
