Wow far fewer Yokozuna withdrew on their debut tournament than I expected. It's hard to read too much into it but I'd imagine there is going to a lot of scrutiny and expectation on Hoshoryu's next outing.
Hey, it's tough -- and I may look into the stats of the Yokozuna absences throughout their careers (as we saw with Terunofuji, and Hakuho at the end... though Hakuho gets a pass. I mean, come on.)
It's going to be tough after this for Hoshoryu, and I hope Onosato AND Kotozakura make it to Yokozuna, so it's not only on Hoshoryu's head.
That said, looking at records in run-up to promotions, Hoshoryu's was entirely fair, because others have been promoted on far less (though... Futahaguro is not a good look.)
Anyway, for the rest of March 2025 basho, biting nails over Takayasu, Onosato... and.... who else? I bet it will come down to a play-off.
